Brewarrina Shire Council secures $25,000 for new Heritage Advisor
Brewarrina Shire Council is delighted to announce the successful acquisition of $25,000 in funding from the 2025-27 Local Government Heritage Grants, dedicated to engaging local historian and researcher Kaye Schofield as their new Heritage Advisor. This investment will support the ongoing preservation and celebration of the region’s rich cultural and historic assets.
Brewarrina Shire Council General Manager David Kirby said the funding was a fantastic opportunity to build on the important work already undertaken and re-establish this significant position within Council.
“The Heritage Advisor will play a vital role in guiding Council projects, assisting the community with heritage-related queries, and ensuring that Brewarrina’s unique stories are safeguarded for future generations. Through this initiative, we reaffirm our commitment to honouring local heritage and fostering a deeper understanding of our past,” said Mr Kirby.
“We have been collaborating closely with the Brewarrina Historical Society, whose advice has been invaluable in highlighting the essential need to re-establish the Heritage Advisor role. Ongoing projects led by the Historical Society, in partnership with Kaye Schofield, underscore both the significance of Brewarrina’s heritage and the considerable work that still lies ahead in this space.
“Kaye has a wealth of experience, having already worked on and accomplished many research projects focused on our region. Most recently, she has completed an 80-page book on the Brewarrina Theatre – all at her own expense – and she is currently undertaking research in Brewarrina’s old cordial processing facilities.
“These are just a few examples Kaye’s work and now thanks to this funding, Council can play a role in enhancing these projects in the heritage space alongside Kaye and the Historical Society and ensure our region’s rich past is preserved for generations to come.”
Ms Schofield’s role as Council’s Heritage Advisor officially commenced on July 1, 2025, with the start of the grant funding program.
