Autumn School Holiday Program

Brewarrina Shire Council is gearing up for a bumper school holidays thanks to an action-packed program supported by the Youth Centre.

Brewarrina Shire Council General Manager David Kirby said the autumn school holiday program was focused on creating and supporting a range of fantastic events and experiences to keep kids engaged and entertained.

“Our Community Youth Centre and Youth Programs are key in enhancing social well-being and engaging regional youth for personal growth, skill development, and community involvement,” Mr Kirby said.

“These school holidays, kids can learn important financial and life skills at an overnight camp, receive free haircuts, participate in music, dance and circus workshops, improve skateboarding, connect with country, and celebrate cultural heritage. There will also be a live performance by renowned First Nation’s musician Barkaa. It promises to be an eventful few weeks.”

Week one of the program begins with a two-day overnight financial literacy camp on Monday April 14 and Tuesday April 15, designed to empower the next generation with money confidence. Made possible through funding from the Foundation for Rural Regional and Remote – ANZ Seeds of Life grant program, and in partnership with Moogahlin Performing Arts, the Moolah Bagul Wulung Financial Literacy Program is a powerful step toward financial empowerment for First People’s youth. The program is free but registration is essential and limited to 40 spots only.

On Wednesday April 16 and Thursday April 17, the crew from Yellowbelly Bourke in partnership with Nakama Arts will be taking over the Visitor Information Centre, providing free barber haircuts, music workshops, BBQ lunch and a special performance from renowned musician Barkaa.

On Tuesday April 22, the team from Songlines Skateboarding will be bringing their unique program to the Brewarrina Skate Park offering free skate lessons, skateboard building and design, and community skate demonstrations.

The final week of the holidays rounds out with the 10th Biaime’s Ngunnhu Festival – a four-day celebration of culture and connection from Wednesday April 23 to Saturday April 26. Held on the banks of the Barwon River in Wier Park the cultural event features live music and dance, community stalls, fashion, art, tours, history and more.

Every day across the the first week of the holiday period, Moogahlin Performing Arts and Casus Creations will be running circus and modern dance workshops for six- to eight-year olds at 10am, nine- to 13-year olds at 11.30am and 14+ at 2pm at the Community Centre.

“A reminder that three public holidays also fall within these school holidays, and the Youth Centre and most Council facilities will be closed for Easter on Friday April 18 and Monday April 21, as well as Friday April 25 for ANZAC Day,” concluded Mr Kirby.
