In line with their commitment to support the ongoing preservation and celebration of the region’s rich cultural and historic assets, Brewarrina Shire Council is proud to announce they’ve published a second edition of Shooting Stars: The History of the Brewarrina Picture Theatre 1922-1987. The captivating new book by acclaimed author, historian and Heritage Advisor for Council, Kaye Schofield, is now available to purchase exclusively at the Brewarrina Visitor Information Centre. 

The meticulously researched book chronicles the vibrant history of Brewarrina’s beloved picture theatre, from its establishment in 1922 by Jack McDougall to its closure in 1987. Through rich storytelling and archival photographs, Ms Schofield brings to life the social and cultural significance of the theatre, which served as a gathering place for generations of locals.

Ms Schofield, who was born in Sydney but has strong family ties to Brewarrina, said the far west community had always held a special place in her heart and her fascination with the town’s history inspired her to write the book. 

“My family’s deep connection to the town and its stories inspired me to document this unique piece of history. The Brewarrina Picture Theatre wasn’t just a place to watch movies, it was a hub of community life, where people came together under the stars to share laughter, joy and sometimes even tears. I wanted to preserve those memories before they faded away.

“Brewarrina is a small outback town with a big story to tell. Its history is rich, complex and deeply intertwined with the resilience of its people. Writing this book has been a late-life obsession for me. It is the first in what I hope will be a set of small topic-based local histories, and something that may inspire others to explore and celebrate their own local histories.”

Brewarrina Shire Council General Manager David Kirby said Council was proud to play a part in preserving the history of the region by working alongside Ms Schofield to publish the second edition of her book.
