Brewarrina Shire Council’s extensive Main Street revitalisation marks major milestone
Brewarrina Shire Council’s ambitious, more than $6 million Main Street reactivation has marked a major milestone this week with the tender for the detailed design of the project now open.
The extensive development is set to revitalise the heart of the historic town centre and nearby river precinct, which overlooks the National Heritage listed Baiame Ngunnhu (Aboriginal Fish Traps), into a welcoming, vibrant and modern hub for residents and visitors alike, celebrating the regions deep-rooted cultural significance.
Brewarrina Shire Council General Manager David Kirby said it was incredibly exciting to be moving into the next phase of this historic project, which aims to breathe new life into the community’s central space, enhancing both its functionality and appeal.
“The revitalisation of the Brewarrina town centre and Baiame Ngunnhu precinct is a visionary project that not only celebrates our rich cultural heritage and natural beauty but also sets the stage for sustainable growth and development. This initiative will transform Brewarrina into a vibrant, culturally enriched, and thriving destination,” said Mr Kirby.
“We’ve got the vision for what we want the beating heart of our community to look like. Now we need to bring that vision into reality.”
Based on the Main Place framework endorsed by the community last year, this stage of the project is to procure professional services for the development of detailed design and engineering plans and documentations in preparation for construction.
“We are seeking tenders from exceptional and experienced consultants to develop the detailed design and bring our vision to life. It’s a significant undertaking, but we are excited to be moving forward, and I strongly encourage local contractors to consider applying,” said Mr Kirby.
A full scope of work and project requirements is available from the tender documents on Brewarrina Shire Council’s Tenderlink. Tenders must be submitted via Tenderlink by 11am on Tuesday March 11, 2025.
“We’ll keep the community updated on the progress of the project, and one key element of the tender consideration is the contractor’s ability to expedite the process; but understand this will be the most significant redevelopment for our community for decades and due to the scale of the project and the many stakeholders involved, it’s going to take time,” Mr Kirby added.
“Once the tender is awarded, we anticipate the detailed design plans will be delivered mid-way through the year, with construction for central Bathurst Street slated to get underway in Spring,” concluded Mr Kirby.
