Community comes out in force to celebrate launch of Bald Archy Art Exhibition

The community of Brewarrina and surrounding regions came out in force on Thursday, June 12, to celebrate the opening of the cheeky and satirical Bald Archy Art Exhibition. The unique display of portraits will be available to view in Brewarrina until Sunday July 6.

An annual event for Brewarrina Shire Council for over two decades, the Bald Archy Art Prize is renowned for its irreverent take on the traditional Archibald Art competition. It features works that blend wit, humour, and artistic skill and is a platform for artists to creatively express their perspectives on public figures, personalities, and contemporary issues.

This year’s exhibition features over 40 portraits of well know Australian personalities including Hugh Jackman, Kylie Minogue, Gina Rineheart, Robert Irwin, Anthony Albanese and many more.

Famously judged by Maude, the sulphur crested cockatoo, Phil Meatchem’s Despicable Ploy was revealed as the 2025 winner. The work features Peter Dutton playing chess with what appears to be nuclear power plants.

Brewarrina Shire Council General Manager David Kirby said it was wonderful to have the exhibition back in Brewarrina again, and to see so many from across the region attend the special opening night event.

“We have a longstanding relationship with the Bald Archy Art Prize, having first hosted an exhibition more than 20 years ago. It’s an annual event I look forward to every year,” said Mr Kirby.

“The opening night was a resounding success, with a fantastic turnout from the community and visitors across the region. There was a real buzz in the room all evening, highlighting just how much events like this mean to our local culture,”

“The bold and unique exhibition is now open for all to enjoy anytime the Visitor Information Centre is open, until Sunday July 6. I encourage everyone to take the time to visit the exhibition, explore the incredible portraits, and enjoy the unique humour that makes the Bald Archy so special. It’s a celebration of creativity and satire that brings people together and showcases the talent we have in Australia.”

Hosted by the Brewarrina Visitor Information Centre, the full 2025 Bald Archy Art Exhibition is open 9am to 5pm weekdays and 10am to 2pm weekends every day until Sunday July 6. Entry is just $10.
