Community comes out strong to welcome new residents to the Brewarrina Shire
A strong crowd of community members, Councillors, Council staff and local businesses and stakeholders were on hand at the Visitor Information Centre on Friday evening to welcome the region’s newest residents to the Brewarrina Shire, celebrating the diversity and unity of its vibrant community.
Brewarrina Shire Council General Manager David Kirby alongside Deput Mayor Vivian Slack Smith officially greeted new residents at the annual event, fostering connections and friendships within the community.
Mr Kirby said he was very proud to see so many come along to the important occasion, showcasing the region’s diversity and connection.
“Our Welcome to Brewarrina event is an annual highlight for me. It’s an invaluable opportunity to celebrate the diverse backgrounds of our community and the strong sense of connection that binds everyone together. It helps new residents, and their families, settle in by providing them with a platform to meet others, build networks and learn more about our area and the services and opportunities available, so they can feel right at home.
“It was wonderful to welcome our newest residents, some of whom have arrived from across the globe, including Sri Lanka, Nepal and Nigeria, and as well as those from across the state, such as Canberra.
“I wholeheartedly welcome you the Brewarrina Shire. I’m sure once you get a taste of our region and our friendly community, you will never want to leave Bre!” exclaimed Mr Kirby.
Deputy Mayor Vivian Slack-Smith introduced new residents and engaged attendees throughout the evening, asking them to describe Brewarrina in just one word.
The responses painted a vivid picture of community spirit, with words such as “community,” “tranquillity,” “home far away from home,” and “reminds me of my grandmother’s village” shared amongst the group.
Many new residents also expressed happiness about having the opportunity to spend more time with their families.
The event saw excellent representation from local community members and various essential services. Attendees included members from the Ambulance service, three local schools, local Police officers, Brewarrina Shire Council and its Councillors, alongside local shearers, mechanics, and business owners.
“This diverse turnout of proud community members and local businesspeople underscores our community’s very special welcoming nature and commitment to supporting its members, new and old.
“The evening was a resounding success, and I am very proud to be upholding and showcasing Brewarrina’s reputation as a community that embraces diversity and fosters a sense of belonging for all its residents,” concluded Mr Kirby.
