Brewarrina Shire Council, community members and service providers came together at the Brewarrina Visitor Information Centre on Wednesday February 25 for the annual “Welcome to Bre” New Resident & Community Event, to connect, share stories and celebrate life in Brewarrina.

General Manager David Kirby said the strong turnout reflects the value of the event in helping new residents settle into the community.

“Our Welcome to Brewarrina event is always a highlight for me. It showcases how great our little community is and recognises the many different journeys that bring people here.

“By giving new residents and their families the space to meet others, build networks and learn about local services and opportunities, we help them feel supported and at home from the moment they arrive.”

This year, Deputy Mayor Vivian Slack-Smith and Council proudly welcomed new residents who had moved to town recently for work with the NSW Police, NSW Ambulance, Brewarrina Christian School, local health services, and Brewarrina Shire Council. Attendees also included long‑term locals, community groups and service providers who came along to offer support and share information.

New residents introduced themselves throughout the evening, sharing the places they previously called home — including Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Sydney, Walgett and even South Africa. Some have returned to Brewarrina to be closer to family, while others were drawn to the region for its rural lifestyle, sense of community and the chance to enjoy a quieter pace of life.

When asked to describe Brewarrina in a single word, new residents offered a collection of heartfelt impressions: “friendliest,” “nice,” “heritage,” “hot,” “home,” “beautiful,” “it’s great,” “peaceful,” “quiet,” “natural,” and “hospitable.”

Mr Kirby said these reflections capture the essence of what makes Brewarrina such a special place to live.

“Our community’s diversity and vibrancy are our greatest strengths, and this event is a celebration of that. It was wonderful to see so many people come together to welcome our newest residents.

“Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the warm, inclusive atmosphere, and most of all, a special welcome to the newest residents of the Brewarrina Shire,” concluded Mr Kirby.
