Brewarrina Shire Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Doreen Murphy as the organisation’s new Community Engagement Manager.

A proud local community member, Ms Murphy brings deep cultural knowledge, strong community relationships and a lifelong commitment to supporting the people of the Brewarrina Shire. Her passion for helping others and creating positive outcomes has shaped her work across the region and continues to guide her approach to community engagement.

“Family and spending time out on Country are very important to me and keep me grounded and connected to culture, community and wellbeing,” Ms Murphy said.

“I am incredibly excited to begin this role and feel privileged to have the opportunity to give back to the community I proudly call home.”

In her new position, Ms Murphy will lead Council’s community engagement, youth programs, cultural initiatives and local partnerships. She will work closely with residents, organisations and stakeholders to strengthen participation, support local priorities and help create opportunities that bring people together.

“I look forward to building strong relationships, supporting local initiatives and creating opportunities that empower our community,” she said.

“I am especially passionate about supporting young people, strengthening community connections and helping create safe, welcoming spaces where people feel supported, valued and encouraged to thrive. By listening to community and working together, we can continue building a stronger and more connected future for everyone.”

Council’s General Manager David Kirby welcomed Ms Murphy to the role, noting her strong local ties and genuine commitment to community wellbeing.

“Doreen’s passion for Brewarrina, her cultural grounding and her dedication to supporting our young people make her an outstanding addition to Council,” said Mr Kirby.

“We are delighted to have her leading this important work.”

Ms Murphy has already hit the ground running, leading preparations for a vibrant Winter School Holiday Program aligned with NAIDOC Week. Supported by additional funding from the Premier’s Department, this year’s program will feature a mix of cultural, creative and recreational activities for young people of all ages and their families.

“NAIDOC Week is a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience and pride of our First Nations people. It’s a time to celebrate culture, honour our Elders and create opportunities for our young people to learn, connect and stand tall in who they are. Our upcoming school holiday program will reflect those values and bring our community together in such a positive way,” added Ms Murphy.
