Tribute for the late Councillor Angelo Pippos from Mayor Tom Stanton
On behalf of Brewarrina Shire Council and the entire Brewarrina community, it is with profound sadness that we honour the extraordinary life and legacy of Councillor Angelo Pippos, whose passing marks the end of an era for our Shire.
Angelo’s unparalleled dedication to the Brewarrina Shire Council spanned an incredible 50 years, beginning on February 8, 1974, when Angelo was officially sworn in as Councillor of Brewarrina Shire Council for the first time. During this time, he served as Mayor for 12 years and Deputy Mayor for 15 years, leading with vision, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the people of Brewarrina and the wider Western Division. His tireless work for our community is a testament to his deep love for this region and its people.
Angelo’s contributions extended far beyond the Council chambers. He was a stalwart advocate for local services and projects, playing an active role on committees including what was known as the Brewarrina Town Improvement Committee, Traffic Committee, Big Sky Libraries, and the Aged Care Units Committee, where his passion for the well-being of the elderly was unmatched. Angelo also supported Council staff and the General Manager with unwavering reliability, attending every community event, no matter how demanding his schedule. His presence was a source of strength and encouragement for us all.
Angelo’s family business, Café Deluxe, was a cornerstone of the Brewarrina community, established by his father, who migrated to Australia in 1927. Angelo worked tirelessly to keep the café running, creating a welcoming space for locals and visitors alike until it was tragically destroyed by fire in 2014. Through it all, Angelo exemplified resilience, determination, and a commitment to service that defined his life. There isn’t a single person who grew up in the Brewarrina District that doesn’t have a story to share about Angelo and the café, as it laid out the very cultural fabric of our community.
Angelo’s love for life extended to his passion for horse racing, as the proud owner of the legendary Gunsynd, the “Goondiwindi Grey.” This pride not only highlighted his enthusiasm for the sport but also brought joy and recognition to our region.
Above all, Angelo’s life was anchored by his greatest love – his wife Margie. Their unbreakable bond and partnership were a testament to the power of love and commitment, and Margie was his rock through every step of his journey.
Angelo Pippos’ service to the Brewarrina Shire, its residents, and the entire Western Division will never be matched. His leadership, kindness, and unwavering dedication to community will leave a lasting legacy that Brewarrina Shire Council is committed to upholding.
To Margie, the Pippos family, and everyone who knew and loved Angelo, we offer our deepest condolences. While his loss is immeasurable, his legacy will live on in the heart of Brewarrina and the lives he touched.
As a sign of respect to Councillor Angelo Pippos and to honour his service to the Shire, Council will officially retire his allocated Chambers seat for the remainder of 2024.
Rest in peace, Angelo. Your contributions, your kindness, and your love for this community will never be forgotten. We are going to miss you mate.
Tom Stanton
