Brewarrina Shire welcomes new Mayor, Councillor Tommy Stanton

October 9, 2024 – Brewarrina Shire Council has welcomed a new Mayor, long-serving Councillor Tommy Stanton, after the recently elected Councillors were sworn in and voted on who would lead them at an extra ordinary meeting this morning.

Cr Vivian Slack-Smith, who has served two terms as Mayor, was also elected Deputy Mayor.

In his tenth year serving on Brewarrina Shire Council, Cr Tommy Stanton becomes only the second First Nations Mayor to lead the far-west community.

Previously having served as Deputy Mayor, Cr Stanton, who has lived in Goodooga all his life said he was honoured and inspired to have the opportunity to further serve his community and work with his fellow Councillors.

“I am deeply honoured and grateful for the trust that the community and my fellow Councillors have placed in me and the opportunity to serve our community,” said Cr Stanton.

“In my past 10 years serving on council, I have been incredibly proud of our community’s growth and resilience. As Mayor, I am committed to and look forward to building on this growth and I am excited to be a part of shaping our modern and vibrant future, one we are all proud to call home.

“Thank you for entrusting me with this responsibility.”

Cr Stanton and Cr Slack-Smith begin their four-year term alongside new representatives Belinda Colless, Michael Pedersen and Jason Morton as well as returning Councillors Angelo Pippos, Mark Brown, Douglas Gordon and Trish Frail.

Brewarrina Shire Council General Manager David Kirby said he looked forward to another successful term, working in partnership with the new Mayor and incoming Councillors.

“On behalf of the Brewarrina Shire Council, it is with great pleasure that I extend a warm welcome to our newly elected Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Councillors,” said Mr Kirby.

“Tommy’s wealth of experience, community focus, vision and leadership will play a key role as we continue to build on and grow our community. Together, we aim to create a vibrant and inclusive environment that fosters growth and opportunities.

“Congratulations on your new role, and we look forward to a fruitful and inspiring term under your guidance,” concluded Mr Kirby.
