Goodooga Road upgrades underway
An almost $900,000 project to upgrade a section of the Goodooga Road kicked off last week, to improve driver safety and boost tourism.
The works are the first of many upgrades as part of the $7 million Roads to Recovery program allocated to the Brewarrina Shire over the next five years.
The Goodooga Road project is set to reseal and widen a 2.5-kilometre length of the road by at least two metres, approximately 1.6 kilometres from the Twin River Road intersection.
Brewarrina Shire Council General Manager David Kirby said this vital project will help improve safety and longevity for the busy tourist route.
“As well as being the main connection between Brewarrina and Goodooga, it also links with Hebel and into Queensland and has become a very popular route on the Outback NSW tourist circuit, especially since the road was fully sealed in the last few years,” said Mr Kirby.
“As tourist traffic has increased, the narrow two-lane road has deteriorated on the shoulders in places, which can pose a danger, especially for smaller vehicles who may need to move off the road to pass road trains and freight trucks.
“The upgrades will reseal and widen the road to eight metres, which is set to improve driving conditions and make the important carriageway more accessible to more tourists. It will also extend the longevity of the roadway and mean a full rehabilitation won’t be needed for some time,” Mr Kirby concluded.
The works are expected to take around four weeks, pending weather. During construction, the speed limit will be reduced. Motorists are urged to drive with caution through all road work sites, and ensure they abide by road rules and obey any traffic controls in place.
